Enhancing an application with UX
Cargill Protein is a leading provider of protein products, serving customers globally. Cargill Protein launched a smart manufacturing initiative to create a number of applications to assist their workers. Applications that help their employees in a range of areas such as: auditing, safety, staffing decisions, and more.
The audit application was created to allow the food safety staff to audit the factories using a tablet on the factory floor, moving away from paper audits.
I was tasked with the responsibility of spearheading the redesign of their audit sign-off process. Collaborating closely with the product owner, I assessed the existing framework, talked with end users, and created a new user journey for the process. By leveraging industry best practices and business requirements, we implemented a more efficient audit sign-off workflow that aimed to reduce turnaround times, and optimize overall productivity. Through user research and iterative improvements, we successfully transformed the audit sign-off process, ensuring alignment with Cargill Smart Manufacturing’s objectives while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Goal of the Project:
Create a more efficient audit sign-off workflow to reduce turnaround times, and optimize overall productivity
Update existing UI to the Smart Manufacturing’s new design system
Project Outcomes:
More efficient audit sign-off workflow
“I feel that all of items proposed during the meeting will be beneficial for the system and for the workers. It’s great work that you all do. Thank you very much!” - Supervisor (after final round of testing)
Updated modern UI, consistent with other smart manufacturing applications

INTERVIEWS:
To begin I set up time with the team to assess the current state of the application and understand the business objectives/requirements. From there I set up interviews with the users at the factories to gather additional insights and feedback.
Insights:
Users need to be able to add more comments.
User need to would like to submit audits individually throughout there shift (clear the queue.)
Wrong dates on audits are a common problem.
THEMATIC ANALYSIS:
After the interviews, I organized my findings into a thematic analysis within FigJam to walk through with the product owner. Together we discussed the findings as well as the business requirements.
New Requirements:
Redesign the audit process to one area of the app.
Chunk it out for easy of flow through the process.
Users want to submit individually, but regulation prohibited it. Working with the Product Owner I purposed creating a new flow that allowed the users to clear audits from their screen throughout the work day. When an audit was complete it would be added to a final sign off screen. At the end of the shift, once all items had been completed and added to the sign off page the user would be able to submit all audits. This new chunked out flow would meet the business requirement of submitting all audits at once, while making the workers process throughout the day easier.
